A closure 17 of metal or other rigid material with a peripheral flange crimped around the rim of a container 13 has a line of weakness 21, Fig. 3 (not shown), extending around the flange whereby the lower crimped part may be removed by a tear tab 51. A further tab 55, which extends between the spaced ends of the line of weakness is not removed, and is used to remove the closure after the crimped part has been torn off. The closure includes an annular embossment 37, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a coating of sealing material 41 around its rim receiving channel. The closure is applied by being pressed downwardly on to the rim to compress the sealing material, after which the flange is crimped. The container may contain food products under vacuum.
