The longitudinal edges of a wrapping sheet folded in tubular form about a slice of cheese, overlap to form an unsealed lap joint 14, Fig. 1, with the edge of the outer layer folded back; the ends of the wrapper are seamed to form releasable fin seals 17, 18. A group of wrapped slices may be enclosed in a wrapper of a similar nature, the end seals of which may be crimped. Wrapping conveyers.-Wrapping material, fed from a roll 23, Fig. 7, is entubed around cheese slices 12, fed by a conveyer 42, in an adjustable forming device 24. The portions of the tube between adjacent slices are sealed by sealer 26 and severed by rotary cutters 186. Prior to wrapping the slices are laterally aligned at a station 27, comprising a pair of belts 67, 68. As a slice 12, Fig. 15, enters the alignment station, the side edges of the slice are raised on rollers 59 (Fig. 15) and the whole slice is raised from the conveyer by a cushion of air, blown from tubes 62. In this way the slices may easily be moved into lateral alignment by the belts 67, 68.
