The composition may also include an orthophosphate (Pi), such as [PO4]-3, [HPO4]-2, [H2PO4]-, H3PO4, salts thereof, or combinations thereof. The present disclosure also pertains to plants or seeds that have been treated with the compositions of the present disclosure. The plant and seeds of the present disclosure may express a phosphite oxidoreductase-encoding gene, such as ptxD. The methods of the present disclosure may also include a step of introducing a phosphite oxidoreductase-encoding gene into a plant or seed of the present disclosure.
