This variation of the method also includes, during a second time period succeeding the first time period: selecting the tray for fulfillment of an electronic order based on product-handling parameters specified in the product template; via the dispensing unit, dispensing a first product unit from the tray according to the electronic order; detecting a trigger to discard a second product unit; and, via the dispensing unit, dispensing the second product unit.
