Plants of the present disclosure have a reduced leaf area index and a range of agronomically relevant characteristics. The present disclosure additionally relates to soybean plants including a mutated JAG1 allele and further including increased expression of one or more of a photosystem II subunit S (PsbS) polypeptide, a zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP) polypeptide, and a violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) polypeptide. The present disclosure further relates to soybean plants with a reduced leaf area index including increased expression of one or more of a Rubisco small subunit (RbcS) polypeptide and a RUBISCO ASSEMBLY FACTOR 1 (RAF1) polypeptide. In addition, the present disclosure relates to soybean plants further including increased expression of one or more of a CYP78A polypeptide and a TERMINAL EAR1-like (TEL1) polypeptide.
