The present invention relates to a plant or plant cell that is genetically modified to overexpress a gene that codes for the D-3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PGDH1) protein, wherein PGDH1 comprises amino acids conserved between species and wherein said plant does not belong to the Arabidopsis thaliana species. The invention further relates to a method that comprises transforming wild type plants or plant cells with a recombinant expression vector. The invention also relates to uses of the plant or plant cell for producing proteins, amino acids and/or starch.
