In a near-infrared light emitting device (100), a spectral distribution of output light (20) has a light component derived from fluorescent light of a phosphor at least in a wavelength range of 600 nm or more and less than 980 nm, a center of gravity of a spectral distribution of wavelength converted light by the phosphor is in a wavelength range of 700 nm or more and less than 900 nm, a spectral intensity in a wavelength range of 660 nm or more and less than 900 nm has a minimum value that is more than 50% of a maximum value, in the spectral distribution, a light intensity of the spectral distribution of the wavelength converted light gradually decreases as a wavelength becomes shorter from a wavelength of 600 nm, and the light intensity gradually decreases as the wavelength becomes longer from a wavelength of 980 nm.
