Paenibacillus bacterial strains are engineered to express or overexpress (i) one or more proteins (pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase, flavodoxin, and/or ferredoxin) involved in the electron transport chain, (ii) the DUF protein and/or (iii) gene products of the suf operon. This enables a greater rate/level of nitrogen fixation by the diazotrophic bacteria. The engineered bacteria are introduced to agricultural plants, or seeds for growing such, forming a symbiotic relationship that results in increased nitrogen availability to the plant and improved plant agronomic traits.
