GENETICALLY MODIFIED PLANTS WITH IMPROVED DROUGHT TOLERANCE AND/OR RECOVERY, METHOD FOR OBTAINING SUCH PLANTS, AND USE THEREOF

The present invention relates to a method for obtaining a genetically modified plant having improved drought tolerance and/or recovery, as compared to a wild-type control plant of the same species, comprising the steps of: (i) modifying the genomic DNA in at least one cell of said plant species to reduce or eliminate expression of a BAC2 gene or an orthologue thereof, thereby obtaining a genetically modified cell; (ii) generating a plant from the genetically modified cell to obtain a genetically modified plant; (iii) growing said genetically modified plant under conditions which permit development of a plant; and (iv) selecting a genetically modified plant having improved drought tolerance and/or recovery. Further, the invention relates to genetically modified plant obtainable by the method of the invention, and exhibiting reduced expression of a BAC2 gene product as compared to the wild-type control of the same species, as well as uses of the genetically modified plant.
