Said protein variant comprises at least one mutation by comparison to the corresponding native maize eIF(iso)4E protein. The present invention also relates to a nucleic acid encoding at least one eIF(iso)4E protein variant as defined above, a vector comprising said nucleic acid and a genetically modified or edited maize plant or seed resistant to at least one maize virus, comprising at least one eIF(iso)4E protein variant as defined above. The present invention also relates to a method for obtaining a genetically modified or edited maize plant resistant to at least one maize virus.
