For plural regions of the digital image, detectability measures are determined, including a first measure corresponding to a synchronization component and a second measure corresponding to a message component of the watermarking. A robustness map is algorithmically generated from the detectability measures and indicates detectability of the digital watermarking at each pixel, groups of pixels, or image areas of the digital image. The robustness map serves as a mask to identify one or more areas in which the indicated detectability falls short of a predetermined threshold. The digital watermarking is automatically re-embedded in the identified areas using a stronger embedding strength or a different type of encoding protocol.
