Disclosed herein are plants, plant seeds, and plant cells that are modified to overexpress a trans-Golgi network (TGN) associated and microtubule (MT)-binding protein, TGNap-1. Such plants, plant seeds, and plant cells can be, but are not limited to, Arabidopsis thaliana, grape, cotton, soybean, tomato, potato, rice, sorghum, corn, coffee, wheat, citrus (e.g. orange), an apple. The modified plants exhibit approximately a five-fold reduction against the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae DC3000, a rod-shaped, gram-negative bacterium. The modified plants also exhibit normal plant size and biomass accumulation as compared to a control plant.
