Methods include mixing nanocelluloses with plant growth substrate materials. The compositions include the possible addition of monovalent, divalent, or trivalent inorganic salts that supply essential plant nutrients. These compositions can be processed into plug or mat forms suitable for supporting the germination and growth of crops. Carboxylated nanocellulose-based compositions can be directly applied as soil conditioners or amendments to enhance soil health and plant development.
