The composition of βHB, salt thereof, or the metabolic precursor thereof may be formulated as food, a food product, a food supplement, or a combination thereof. The composition may be formulated for oral administration, optionally together with micronutrients. Administration elevates circulating βHB and reduces depressive symptoms as assessed by standardized clinical rating scales.
