In the economic development of India, the agriculture sector has an important role. The gradingaccording to the size and quality of the product are very important for fetching a proper price. The uniformity in size is a pre requisite which makes the product attractive besides augmentingits processing qualities. At present, the grading of agricultural products such as garlic, lemon, onion, mandarin, orange, apple and tomato is carried out manually by the farmers, whole sellersand retail shopkeepers. When the grading is manually done by humans, it tends to be timeconsuming, requiring labor and will also be inefficient and prone to error. The proposedautomated grading system not only saves time but also minimizes error. The machine is alsouseful for detection of rotten onions from the healthy onions. The system uses gas sensor todetect gases from rotten onions and a cost microcontroller system to make decisions. A DCMotor and a servomotor are used for operating the vibrating tray and rotten onion separatingflap mechanism. The prototype can handle 2-3 kg of onion input. The system can be modifiedfor sorting of other agricultural products such as potatoes, tomatoes, etc.
