Methods and means for producing cannabinoids by generation of a transgenic plant modified to include a cannabinoid-producing pathway are described. The method comprises providing a set of different genes and introducing the set of genes into a genetically transformable plant or plant species using a combinatorial nuclear transformation technique, thereby generating a transgenic plant capable of producing cannabinoids. The set of different genes comprises at least three different genes wherein each gene has a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of: SEQ ID NO:3, SEQ ID NO:4, SEQ ID NO:5, SEQ ID NO:6, SEQ ID NO:7, SEQ ID NO:12, SEQ ID NO:13, SEQ ID NO:14, SEQ ID NO:15, SEQ ID NO:16 and sequences having at least 45% sequence identity with each of these sequences. Suitably, the genetically transformable plant or plant species is a Nicotiana plant, optionally Nicotiana tabacum or Nicotiana sylvestris.
