The method can include culturing a transformed plant tissue on a root induction medium comprising a selection agent to produce a composite plant, wherein the transformed plant tissue comprises root forming competent cells and a gene that confers resistance to the selection agent, and wherein the composite plant comprises a wild-type shoot and a root that comprises transgenic cells; culturing the composite plant on a shoot induction medium to produce a modified shoot on the composite plant, wherein the modified shoot is different than the wild-type shoot; and culturing the modified shoot on a growth medium, thereby producing a modified plant or plant part.
