Vertical farms, and CEA in general, have the potential to feed the expanding world population. Apart from sustainability issues with mining peat and coco, the availability of (natural) substrates is not sufficient to grow enough fresh produce. Next generation substrates, such as biopolymer based growing mediums, promise to solve these issues and are the way forward for CEA.

A presentation by Martin Tietema, CEO of Growfoam BV.

View of the speaker

Question 1: What drives you?We want to create a better future. Wasteless and with enough food for everyone.

Question 2: Why should the delegate attend your presentation? For an unbiased glimpse of the future in one of the most important parts of CEA; substrates.

Question 3: What emerging technologies / trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?Biopolymer baseAd growing substrates.

Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?CO2 reduction, optimized yields, conservation of valuable nature, pathogen free growing.

Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?Acceptation.

About Martin TietemaAfter finishing his study in microbiology at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Martin discovered the endless possibilities of polymers and came to realization that all products can be produced sustainable with use of (bio)polymers. Teaming up with his partners Martijn Beljaars, Vincent van Assen en Wilfred Roo, they’ve invented the world’s first and only production method for creating soft, open celled, 100% circulair and biodegradable foam.

About Growfoam BVGrowfoam® is the worlds first and only sustainable growing medium, based on biodegradable biopolymers.

Martin Tietema is speaker at the 2022 edition of the Vertical Farming Conference, part of the Agrifood Innovation Event.
