Treasure Island (FL): StatPearls Publishing; 2026 Jan–.ABSTRACTFODMAP is an acronym for fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides, and polyols—short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and subsequently fermented by colonic bacteria. These carbohydrate groups are associated with the induction or worsening of functional gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea. Their osmotic effects increase luminal water content, while bacterial fermentation produces gases and short-chain fatty acids, leading to intestinal distension. In individuals with visceral hypersensitivity, this distension contributes to the characteristic symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional bowel disorders. Common dietary sources of FODMAPs include stone fruits, legumes, lactose-containing foods, wheat and other fructan-containing grains, vegetables such as onions and garlic, and foods containing polyol sweeteners.PMID:32965895 | Bookshelf:NBK562224
