Olive oil: a pillar of healthy eating
The International Olive Council (IOC), the only intergovernmental organisation in the world that brings together producers and consumers of olive oil and table olives, joins in celebrating World Food Day by highlighting the importance of olive products in diets and their central role in the Mediterranean diet, recognised as one of the healthiest in the world. Rich in antioxidants and monounsaturated fatty acids, olive oil and table olives, pillars of this nutritional regime, contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and play a key role in a balanced diet.
The Mediterranean diet, inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list since 2010, promotes fresh, local, and natural products, making it a virtuous dietary model not only for health but also for the environment.
The IOC is also pleased to announce that World Olive Day, which will be celebrated on 21 November 2024, will be dedicated to the publication of the Mediterranean food pyramid. Detailed information about this event will be published soon.
On this World Food Day, the IOC invites everyone to celebrate and embrace the benefits of olive oil and table olives for a sustainable, healthy and nutritious diet.
