The method includes the following steps that: S101, after the menu of food which is sold at the current meal is checked, dishes are selected; S102, the amount of the selected dishes is calculated, a food ordering order is generated; S103, the food ordering order is settled, after the settlement of the food ordering order is completed, a food ordering list is generated; S104, the food ordering list is transmitted to and is displayed at a background, so that a food seller can put food in the container of a user according to the food ordering list; S105, the food ordering list and personal settlement information are packaged, so that food ordering information can be formed; S106, the food ordering information is stored; and S107, the stored food ordering information is uploaded to a background data server. The present invention also provides a self-service food ordering system for school canteens. With the system adopted, the food seller does not need to carry out work such as food ordering settlement, and he or she only needs to put the food in the container of the user according to the food ordering list which is generated after the settlement is completed, and therefore, the workload of the food seller can be greatly decreased, and food ordering efficiency can be improved.
