The Life+ Integral Carbon Project full of more than 600 city youth the University of Burgos Science classrooms

D.1. Communication and dissemination actions

The University of Burgos celebrates the success of the LIFE + Integral Carbon project with the participation of over 600 children and youth in the city of Burgos, in divulging scientific activities.

The LIFE+ Integral Carbon project aims to mitigate climate change through the implementation of techniques for capturing greenhouse gases in the agribusiness sector. Developed and implemented an innovative process by which waste and by-products of agribusiness are revalued energy and also the harmful gases produced in these industries are set by algae, which incorporate them into their own tissues and can subsequently be applied to the soil as bio- improving soil and crops.

A major project like this, set in the European LIFE program and coordinated by the University of Burgos deserves to be shared with the younger members of society. Therefore, on days 8, 10, 11 and March 18, schools: Círculo Católico, CEIP Fuentecillas, IES Pintor Luis Sáez and CEIP Los Vadillos enjoy many activities.

The workshops aim to value the importance of agriculture in our society, bringing knowledge of the environment, science and technology into the classroom. Understanding the cycle of the vine, the importance of fermentation and food processing, differentiate between bacteria and mold / yeast, or the importance of microorganisms as responsible for soil fertility is part of a participatory learning. Where understanding the importance of mitigating climate change and the need to reforest are key in the process.

The experiments are conducted taking into account the educational level. In secondary we show the use of the microscope for the identification of native algae, bacteria and fungi. In primary education, simulation of the temperature rise produced greenhouse gases emitted in a city through a model for understanding the greenhouse effect and its implications for climate change. And in early childhood education, the activity that excites the smallest, from previous experience, is the production of seed bombs to reforest areas without plants.

We are confident that the success of the workshops is apparent, so that the aim of disseminating and raising public awareness about the importance of mitigating climate change does continue on the research team of the project LIFE + Integral Carbon "Development and globla enforcement of GHG capture photobioreactors inagroindustrial activities"
