The method involves: carrying out a plurality of treatment cycles in order to clean goods to be treated by means of the domestic appliance (1) using the sustainability treatment program, wherein after each treatment cycle is carried out, the sustainability treatment program is adapted by changing at least one of the aforementioned number of parameter values, said changed parameter value influencing the usage quantity (V) of at least one resource (31, 32) per treatment cycle and being changed such that the usage quantity (V) of the at least one resource (31, 32) is reduced when using the adapted sustainability treatment program in comparison to the treatment cycle which has been carried out, and the adaptation of the sustainability treatment program is paused and/or terminated after the respective treatment cycle on the basis of a received user input (FB).
