A system (800) is disclosed for rating the sustainability of legal entities such as companies and governments (854). In a computer embodiment, data is stored (720) concerning non-economic factors (822) that are used to compute (830) sustainability scores. A company's automatically entered data (829) is used to compute one or more sustainability scores (823) for an entity's performance with respect to its impact on people and/or the environment and to its own governance. Additional, a score for financial and economic criteria may also be computed. Individual sustainability scores may be derived for each of these criteria, or a single score may be computed for all of them (824). The reported sustainability scores rate companies, governments, products and even executives on a scale, or with respect to each other, or within groups such as whole industries (828). A subscriber (852) is permitted to customize (826) how scores are computed, to reflect institutional preferences.
