The rapid rise in global population and industrial development has significantly driven up energyEnergy demand and consumption. At present, fossil fuels remain the primary source of energyEnergy to meet this growing need. However, the heavy reliance on these non-renewable sources characterized by high costs, finite availability, and substantial greenhouse gas emissions poses serious threats to both human health and the environment. This situation underscores the pressing need to develop and adopt alternative, sustainableSustainable energy energyEnergy solutions. RenewableRenewable energy energyEnergy sources offer a viable, eco-friendly, and sustainable approach to addressing the global energyEnergy crisis. Among these, biogas generated through anaerobic digestionAnaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes such as agricultural residues and animal manure stands out as a promising option. Despite the abundance of agricultural biomass, adopting lignocellulosicLignocellulosic feedstocks for biogasBiogas production remains limited. This is primarily due to the structural complexity of plant cell walls, which resist microbial degradation. Consequently, pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials is essential to enhance biogas yields. This paper provides an overview of various pretreatmentPretreatment methods for lignocellulosicLignocellulosic biomassBiogas aimed at improving biogas production. It also discusses the limitations of existing technologies and emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable, locally adaptable, and environmentally friendly pretreatment strategies.
