The control unit determines a state of the medical device, at least one component that is related to the state of the medical device, and display items derived from the state of the medical device and concerning the at least one determined component. A display unit simultaneously displays the display items. The display items include a detail view area with a representation of the at least one component, and an information area with information related to the state of the medical device and concerning the at least one component. The display items also include an overall view area with sub-areas that are representations of regions of the medical device. At least one of the sub-areas indicates in which region the at least one component is located. The medical device is controlled by a control method.
