The surgical instrument includes a sensor having different output modes and a control circuit coupled to the sensor. The control circuit is configured to determine whether a version of the modular component corresponds to a version of the surgical instrument and cause the sensor to output data detected by the sensor in different output formats that are compatible with the version of the particular surgical instrument in which the cartridge has been inserted.
