The insertion apparatus includes a sensor control device, a housing, and a guide for guiding insertion of a sensor into the skin. The housing may have an interface element, a cover, and a device carrier configured to releasably retain the sensor control device. The guide may be configured to support at least a portion of the sensor, and includes a retaining element. In a first configuration, the retaining element is configured to engage with the interface element to resist distal movement of the housing relative to the guide. In a second configuration, the interface element is configured to disengage from the retaining element to distally move the housing relative to the guide and insert the sensor into the skin.
