In a first aspect, the second pipe/cable is housed within the first pipe/cable. A second aspect only comprises a first pipe/cable with the sensors housed in cavities along the pipe/cable. A further aspect comprises processing apparatus which receives signals from the sensors to determine the motion or inclination of the pipe/cable. This data is then used to determine if the parameters are within predefined parameter values. The invention further encompasses apparatus for attaching onto the pipe/cable as it is being laid, the apparatus comprising a plurality of sensors configured to output one or more signals associated with the movement and the inclination of the sensor. The sensor apparatus comprises two or more sensor sets, disposable longitudinally along the pipe/cable in series, each set comprising one or more sensors. Each of the sensor sets makes measurements of the acceleration and the inclination with respect to gravity in at least one direction. The sensor apparatus also comprises a transmitter for transmitting data associated with the measurements.
