A personal item transport container (PITC) (1700), such as a briefcase, suitcase, backpack, purse, or similar portable/hand-carryable container (100.C) is configured for manual transportation by a user, and to contain and carry other specific items (100) within for transport by the user. The PITC (1700) is configured with a processor (204), one or more sensors (200. C), and other suitable electronics to detect the items (100) within, and possibly items (100) which are proximate to the PITC (1700). The PITC (1700) stores a user-editable list (1715) of items which are expected by a user (AU) to be in the PITC (1700) during transit, and compares the list (1715) as against the portable items (100) which are actually present in the PITC (1700) during transit, at the conclusion of transit, or when repacking items in the PITC (1700). The PITC (1700) provides alerts, messages, or other notifications to the user (A) if an item (or items) (100) expected to be present in the container are detected to not be present when/where expected. The PITC 1700) may be further configured to self-assess when it itself is lost, misplaced, stolen, misappropriated, or wandering.
