Each of the first and second digital maps each comprise a plurality of arcs connected by nodes representing the road network in a geographic area. The method comprises determining an abstraction of each of the first digital map and the second digital map. The abstraction of each digital map comprises a plurality of stretches connected by nodes, wherein the nodes of each abstracted digital map are a subset of the nodes of the original digital map from which it is derived, corresponding to the topological nodes thereof. The abstraction of each of the first digital map and the second digital map is used to obtain a map linkage data product which provides a correspondence between the first and second digital maps.
