24,305. Rice, R. H., and Sargent, J. W. Dec. 6. Valve gear.-Relates to means for closing the steam valve immediately upon its liberation as in Corliss valve gear. Fig. 2 shows the device in section. Upon horns 19 and 21 projecting from the valve bonnet 11 are mounted a pair of cylinders. The closure of the valve is effected by steam acting in the lower cylinder 18 on a plunger 22 suitably connected with an arm 13 on the valve spindle 12. The upper cylinder 20 is an air cushioning device, the piston 24 in which has openings covered by leather flaps so as to admit air freely but to prevent its escape. The outlet of air is regulated by a screw 32. The pipe conveying steam to the cylinder 18 is formed with a bend or trap in which water of condensation collects so as to prevent leakage of steam.
