Improvements in Rim-brake Mechanism for Cycles.

9253. Rice, G. W. May 2. Brakes for bicycles, tricycles, &c. Fig. 1 shows the application of the brake to a bicycle. The brake shoes or bobbins A are mounted on the downwardly-turned ends of rods B forming a stirrup which embraces the rim of the wheel and is rigidly secured in front to a lever D pivoted at a to the saddle post and actuated by a spring d so as to release the brake. A rod E secured to the lever D is pivoted in front to a rod G, Fig. 1, connected to a link F pivoted on the fork crown and actuated by the usual brake rod h. The rod h is provided with a suitable universal joint to allow of steering the cycle. An additional spring k may be applied to the rod h as shown. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the rod G is replaced by a stirrup G, and the link F is pivoted on a clip N on the steering- head. The rod h may be dispensed with, and a foot-lever or other mechanism be used to actuate the link F.1>
