129,413. Rice, J. T. July 2. 1918. Machine guns.-Consists in providing a Lewis gun with a receiver readily detachable from the barrel casing so that the receiver, together with the barrel, may be withdrawn rearwards, after which the barrel may be readily detached from the receiver. Fig. 1 shows the barrel 13 detachably connected with the receiver 17 by a locking- pin 53. When thus connected, the barrel is pushed forwardly through the radiator 42, and a flange on the receiver is registered by pins 28 with a flange on the barrel casing 15, these flanges being then fastened together over a projecting ring 14 on the barrel by pivoted locking-bolts 20 arranged as shown in Fig. 10. The bolts have right and left-handed screws respectively and are pivoted at 19 to the casing 15 so that, after releasing clamps 23, they may be swung aside through lateral gaps in the flanges to permit of rearward withdrawal of the receiver and barrel from the casing 15. The locking-bolts are each provided with a milled nut 22 and a loose washer 26, between which is loosely mounted the clamping-lever 23. This lever has a diametral projection 24 normally seated in a corresponding groove in the washer. After screwing up the nut, the lever is turned and the parts are clamped as the projection moves out of the groove. The washer is prevented from rotating by pins 27 engaging recesses in the adjacent flange. Fig. 12 shows modified locking-bolts, which are seated at their front ends in the casing flange 15 and hinged for turning aside on pins 51, which lie within the nuts when these are in clamping position. The gas chamber 30 is made integral with the barrel band 31, and the gas-regulator 32 is provided with a spigot 33, which serves to lock the barrel to the casing. The barrel mouthpiece 40 is screwed to the radiator 42 in Fig. 5, instead of to the barrel, so as not to prevent the rearward withdrawal of the barrel. The radiator casing is provided with a split circular band 45 having an internal projection 47, which engages recesses in the upper most radiator fins 44.
