Beat or lift valves; slide valves; arrangement and disposition of valves.-In a terminal-exhaust engine the exhaust ports b, c are placed about the piston's length from the cylinder ends and are provided with separate mechanically-operated valves. Both valves exhaust from each end of the cylinder. Normally the valves are opened and closed simultaneously, but in starting a condensing engine, a high compression may be avoided by delaying the closing of the valve further from the piston.
