17,680. Bailey, G. D., and Rice, F. E. July 27. Clutches, ratchet; differential or balance gearing.-Relates to positively-acting roller ratchet clutches applicable for use as differential or balance gearing on motor-vehicles. A pair of clutches, each for one direction of drive, is clamped between a plate 16 turning with the road wheel, and a brake drum 15 at each side of the car. Each clutch is built up from a series of stampings to the thickness required to transmit the power. Rollers 19 are carried in recesses, of the shape shown, in the driving- plates 7, 8 and are adapted to engage recesses in the outer driven parts 13, 14. The recesses are stated to be so shaped that there is no tendency for the reverse clutches to come into action during overrunning. The forward-driving clutches are arranged at the axle ends outside the reverse clutches for the same purpose.
