The device may comprise a first source of illumination that impinges upon a bee and is used to generate images using a digital image detection system. The images are analysed by a rapid image analysis system for information about the presence / location of bees, and the presence / location of parasites on the bees. That information is communicated to a triggering and targeting system that directs the emission of light from a second source of illumination at parasite- carrying bees. The physical characteristics of the second source of light are tailored to harm or kill the parasites while leaving the one or more bees substantially or completely unharmed.
