The base unit (12) having a inlet means (23) formed therein for facilitating entry and exit of bees from the unit (20). At least one box (10) is mountable on the base unit (12). The or each box (10) comprises at least one pair of end walls (14) mountable between at least one pair of side walls (16) so as to define an internal space into which the bees are to be contained. A lid member (18) is mountable to an uppermost box (10) so as to substantially seal the internal space. The lid member (18) has a plurality of vents (52) formed therein to facilitate ingress and/or egress of air into the internal space. The end walls (14) of each box (10) has an internal surface configured to support a plurality of frame members therebetween so as to extend across the internal space to provide a surface for supporting the bees.
