10,471. Pollen, A. H., [Duplex Printing Press Co.]. May 14. Cylinder machines with plane printing-surfaces; feeding-apparatus for webs.-Relates to travelling- cylinder machines of the 'Duplex' type, and in particular to means whereby two webs may be fed at different speeds and printed from the same printing - couples. The mechanism is of usual construction and comprises type - beds 1, 2 and cylinders 1, 2 mounted in a carriage 3, reciprocated by cranks 3 and connecting-rods 3. The main web W is led from the reel beneath a guide 2, around feed-rollers 4, beneath a guide 6, over a looper 6, which, with the upper looper 6, is carried on a frame reciprocated vertically by a cam 8, around the cylinder 1, guides 6, 6, 6, 6 and the cylinder 2, over guides 6, 6, looper 6, and guides 6 to the delivery rollers 5. The lowspeed web w is led around the same guides but separate looping-rollers 7, 7, mounted on a frame reciprocated vertically through a smaller range from the main looping-frame by a link 9, are provided, The feed and delivery rollers 4, 5 are divided respectively into sections 4, 4, 5, 5, the sections 4, 5 for manipulating the narrow lowspeed web being loose on the spindle, and being driven by gearing such as 4, 4, 4 from a pinion 4 fast on the spindle, Fig. 2. When a single fullwidth web is to be printed, the gears 4', 4 are suitably proportioned, or the two sections of each of the feed-rolls may be locked together by a setscrew, the looping-rollers 7, 7 being dispensed with. The whole roller 4 may be driven at a low speed by uncoupling the section 4 from the spindle and connecting it to the part 4 by a set-screw, the looping-rollers 7, 7 being in this case used instead of the rollers 6, 6.
