13,201. Pollen, A. H., [Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik Ges.]. June 5. Distributing matrices.-In means for levelling multiple-face matrices (or type-dies) before distribution, the matrices are swung edgeways clear of the ledge which supports the higher matrices. In the first elevator 1, Fig. 1, the lower matrices 4 rest with their top lugs on a bar 6 carried by a lever 7, and the higher matrices 2 rest with their bottom lugs on the known supporting-ledge 3. The bottom lugs of the matrices and the ledge 3 are bevelled as shown. When the elevator rises, the lever 7 encounters a fixed stop 11, Fig. 2, by which it is rocked so that the bar 6 lifts the matrices 4. As the matrices rise, they are swung outwards by the bevelled part of the ledge 3 and finally rest on the top of the ledge at the same level as the matrices 2. In a modification, the lifting-bar 6 engages the feet of the matrices. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the higher matrices are pushed down to the level of the lower ones by a bar 27 carried by a lever 28, which is rocked by a projection 32 on the machine frame. To permit the swinging of the matrices, the rear face 23 of the elevator is pivoted and is held in position by a spring. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the matrices are swung by a slide 36, which engages their bottom lugs, so that no bevelling of the matrices or of the ledge 3 is necessary. Specifications 14,582/90, 18,886/95, 17,962/98, and 25,046/07 are referred to.
