Range-finders.-In short-home-base instruments with one objective, which receives light in its upper half from one end of the base and in its lower half from the other, a pair of separated plus and minus cylindrical lenses P, N with parallel axes are so introduced as to make the magnification in the vertical plane about equal to half the magnification in the horizontal plane of the overlapping images of the half objective, so that the resulting image is approximately square and most of the pupil can be used in viewing.
