9555. Pollen, A. H., [Mergenthaler Setzmaschanen-Fabrik Ges.]. April 22. Proof - taking apparatus for type - bir making machines. A proof or record of the matter set up in the machine is obtained by pressing a proof strip against the assembled line of dies or matrices, preferably with the interposition of an inking- ribbon, in the case of a line of dies, and with the strip consistiog of matrix paper, the inking-ribbon being dispensed with, in the case of a line of matrices ; the dies may however impress a stereotype flong. The Figure shows an assembler-box containing dies 4 and having its rear wall 3 shaped to receive a convex paper guide 5 and slotted for impression of the paper 6 and inking-ribbon 9 against the dies by means of a block 26. The paper is fed from a braked roller 11 by means of a ratchet-device 15, 17, 19 operated by a cam 21, between rollers 16, 25, the roller 25 being constantly pressed against the roller 16 ; the feed renders the impression visible before the assembled line is carried on to the next organ of the machine. The block 26 is reciprocated quickly by the action of a spring 31, lever 29, and cam 32.
