12,453. Pollen, A. H, [Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik Ges.]. May 26. Assembling and distributing matrices. - Relates to means for composing matter in several faces by means of matrices having three or more cavities. The upper rear lugs of the matrices are reduced in length to make room for the uppermost cavities 6. The assembler elevator is provided with two movable shelves 10, 13, Fig. 5, operated by finger-levers 11, 14 respectively and serving to support the matrices in the two upper positions. The usual matrix stop, which prevents rebounding of the matrices as they enter the assembler, is rendered vertically adjustable. The grooves 23 in the delivery channel M, Fig. 8, in which the lugs of the space-bars engage, are inclined downwards so that the space-bars, during their passage through the channel, are lowered to the level of the matrices y, which are at the intermediate level. The lowest matrices hang by their upper lugs from ribs 24, and the intermediate and upper matrices engage with their bottom lugs in grooves 27, 28 respectively. In the casting position, the lowest matrices hang from a ledge 3, Fig. 17, the highest matrices stand on the slide 1 described in Specification 17,962/98, and the intermediate matrices engage with their bottom lugs in a groove formed in the slide 1. After the casting, the slide 1 is withdrawn, so that all the matrices fall to the same level, the space-bars remaining at a higher level. To permit the engagement of the matrices with the second elevator, they are raised to the level of the spacebars by a bar 30 carried by a lever 31, which is rocked by a finger 33 depending from the second elevator T. In a modification, the grooves 23 are sufficiently inclined to bring the space-bars to the level of the lowest matrices, so that raising of the matrices is unnecessary. In another form, the grooves 23 are horizontal, and the matrices are raised by the bar 30 to a correspondingly greater extent. Specification 14,582/90 is referred to.4>
