24,830. Pollen, A. H., and Isherwood, H. Dec. 31. Modifying scale of readings.-Consists in operating a "follow the pointer range receiver at a gun station by setting up on the transmitter the rate of change of range through the medium of the mechanism particularly described and illustrated. Fig. 1 shows the known mechanism employed in transmitting rate of change of range to uniformly-graduated range dials, but modified to suit a " follow the pointer " dial in which the range scale does not follow a straight line law. In the known mechanism a shaft 7, rotated by a hand-wheel 2 or by a suitable motor, operates the step-by-step switch 1, 3 connected to the receiver by a cable 4 and is geared with a pointer 5 moving over a range dial 6. The shaft 7 is rotated at a variable speed determined by the position which a roller 8 occupies with respect to the disk shown, this position being decided by the setting of the " rate of change of range " pointer 15. This pointer is connected to the roller 8 through a sliding rack 17, a link 19 turning about a pivot 20, and a sliding block 9. The disk of the roller 8 is made to rotate at a uniform speed by gearing it to a watch 12 the seconds hand of which, during the turning of the hand-wheel, is kept in register with a fixed line 13. According to the present invention, the position of the pivot 20 of the lever 19 is varied so as to make the pointer 5 move faster at short ranges than at long ones. For this purpose the pivot 20 is carried by a slide 21, a pin 20 on which engages a screw cam groove 23 in a cylinder geared to the shaft 7.
