16,373. Pollen, A. H., and Isherwood, H. July 16. Range-keepers.-Range and bearing are continuously indicated on separate dials. The hand 7 and dial 2 are first set to the initial range and bearing of the target T, and the point A, Fig. 2, is then adjusted along the radial guide 4 till T A, as in Fig. 1, represents the reversed ship's course and speed. The point B is then moved along the radially-adjustable guide 6 till A B as before represents the target's course and speed. The point B now represents the target T with respect to the ships both in bearing and range after unit of time. B N and N T represent R d # and d R respectively, where R stands for range and # for bearing. A movement equal to N T is during setting imparted to the arm 11, and through variable-speed gearing the shaft 21 is continuously rotated at a speed proportional to the change of range, so that the hand 7 automatically indicates range. Similarly a movement equal to R d # is imparted to the member 12. To get from this a movement proportional simply to the change of range, a factor must be introduced equal to the reciprocal of the range. This factor is brought in by means of a cylinder 38 driven from the shaft 21 and carrying a cam-groove 39 which, if developed, would be a rectangular hyperbola, so that the position of the point 39, at any moment, represents the reciprocal of the range. Then with the linkage shown, if 0 Q represents R d # and U V represents l/R, O V represents d #, and this movement is transmitted through the variable-speed gear 46, 47 to the bearing-dial 2.
