14,447. Pollen, A. H., Wood, W. F., and Goulding, B. J. J. July 13. Delivery apparatus; feeding sheets.-In the delivery apparatus, the usual delivery board is replaced by a series of removable and interchangeable trays, the top one being removed when full and the lower one raised to take its place ; and in conjunction with this arrangement, to ensure a regular feed of sheets to the machine, a, supply of sheets is placed on a table raised by screw mechanism as the sheets are removed by the attendant. Fig. 3 shows an end elevation of the delivery asapplied toa Miehle machine. Tworeceiving trays 2, 3 rest one on the other on the support 1 on the framing, and are guided by the vertical sides 1 a of the support. In the support are cut slots 10 through which pass fingers 5, the ends of which normally engage under the bottom tray 2. The - fingers 5 are pivoted on frames 6 movable up and down in guides 7, 8, and having at their lower ends rollers 15 engaging cams 13 on a shaft 11 having an operating-lever 16. Loose on the shaft 11 is a notched cam 19, operating a rod 23 carrying a wedge 29 which moves the rods 32, 33 outwardly. When the upper tray 3 is full, it is removed and the lever 16 is moved to raise the frames 6 and lower tray 2, bringing the latter up to the receiving position and leaving a space under it for the insertion of an empty tray. As the handle 16 is returned, after the insertion of the lower tray, the ratchet 27, 28 rotates the pawl 19 one notch, thereby moving the rods 32 and frames 6 outwardly, and withdrawing the fingers 5 so that they may clear the lower tray and re-engage under it as the frames 6 move down. The fingers 5 are supported by blocks 37, and are free to swing upwards in case of obstruction. In a modification, the frames 6 are moved outwards by pivoted switch cams engaging rollers on them. To ensure a regular supply of sheets to the machine, when it is fed by hand, a table containing a supply of sheets from which the feeder may remove them in batches on to the feed-table as required, is raised gradually by screw and ratchet mechanism, of well-known form, operated by the machine.
