14,289. Pollen, A. H., [Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik Ges.]. June 18. Assembling matrices; keys and keyboards.-Relates to the assembling of multiplefount matrices (or type-dies), and consists in means whereby the depression of each key determines the level at which the matrix is assembled. The matrices are released from the magazine 1, Fig. 1, by escapements 5 operated by rods 10 which rest upon key-levers 8. Matrices assembled at the lower level rest upon the bottom 12 of the assembler, and those assembled at the upper level rest upon fixed ledges. The matrices, as they enter the assembler, are arrested at the upper level by a movable ledge 14 adapted to be pushed into the assembler at the level of the fixed ledges by a lever 20 carrying a bar 19 which rests on a number of push-roJs 16. The key-levers 8 are provided with reduced ends 15 so that the normal depression of a key does not operate the ledge 14. The key-levers engage their pivot 9 by means of a slot 24, and the keys are provided with projections 23 so that a keylever may be pushed to the rear so as to engage one of the rods 16. Depression of the key-lever then causes the ledge 14 to be projected into the assembler. The rods 10 may be positively connected to the key-levers and provided with shoulders which, when the key-levers are pushed to the rear, rest beneath the bar 19. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the key-levers 8 are mounted in a movable frame 6 whereby the movement imparted to the rods 10 may be varied. The ledge 14 is replaced by a vertically movable plate 35 which is raised by an arm 38 on a rod 36. A ridge on the rod 36 is adapted to be engaged by shoulders 27 on the rods 10 when the frame 6 is in the forward position. The rods 10 and their connected parts may be made movable instead of the frame 6. In the form shown in Fig. 12, the ledge 14 is operated by auxiliary levers 40 having finger-pieces 41 and offsets 43 which engage pins 42 on the key-levers. The offsets 43 may be located a short distance above the pins 42 so that the ledge 14 is advanced before the key-levers are depressed. The rear arm of each auxiliary lever 40 is then made in two parts having a yielding connexion to permit of further depression of the auxiliary lever and actuation of the key. lever. In the form shown in Fig. 23, the auxiliary levers are provided with keys 41 mounted on pins which can slide in sockets in the levers and have at their lower ends disks 55 adapted to engage the pins 42 on the key-levers. The keys are held in the upper position by springs. The first part of the depression of the key 41 causes the projection of the ledge 14, and further depression causes the compression of the spring and the actuation of the key-lever. The device may be applied to matrices having more than two faces. When it is applied to matrices having faces in both the front and rear edges, the spiral shoot by which they are turned, as described in Specification 7884/07, is connected with the key-levers or with the auxiliary keys. Specifications 18,886/95 and 17,962/98 are referred to.
