Apparatus for taking a proof of the composition is arranged to co-operate with the type-bar ejecting-mechanism. The impression is made upon a strip 5 passing from a roller 6 to a spring-wound roller 7 between an impression roller 8 and a co-operating feed-roller 9. The roller 9 is fed by means of a ratchet 18 and a pawl 17 on a lever 15 connected with the usual lever 10, which transfers the type-bar 12, ejected from the port 2, to the galley 11. An inking-ribbon 19, supported on rollers 20, 21, may be moved intermittently by means similar to that for moving the strip 5. The frame 4 carrying the paper strip is moved towards the type-bar 12 for the impression by means of a rod 23 connected with the ejector blade 22. When the blade ejects the type-bar, a rod 24 carrying a pawl 25 is moved so as to rotate a shaft, upon which is a toothed wheel 28 having nicks 29 and intermediate spaces 29. A spring 31, attached to the vice 3 and to an arm 32 on the frame 4, holds a pin 30 normally in a nick 29. Rotation.of the wheel 28, however, allows the pin 30 to move to the bottom of the next space 29 and the impression is made, but afterwards, the pin is moved back into the next nick. The arm 32 may be swung about its pivot 34 in order that the frame 4 may be moved downwards on its pivot 4. A stereotype flong may replace the strip 5, the frame being pressed against the type-bar with sufficient force to secure an intaglio impression.
