Methods for treating or preventing infection by a spore-forming bacterium, killing the spore, germinating spore, and/or vegetative cell of a spore-forming bacterium in an environment, and disinfecting, sterilizing, and decontaminating an object are disclosed. The methods involve the use of an inhibitor of bacterial NAD synthetase, optionally in conjunction with a composition that promotes germination of spore-forming bacteria. Suitable compounds for inhibiting bacterial NAD synthetase are described, for example, in PCT WO 02/07516. The compounds can be applied in a variety of manners, including applying a fog, mist, aerosol, spray, foam, gel, and the like to the environment, object, or other substrate to be treated.
