The device comprises two telescopic members 12,14 which together constitute bottom and roof members and side walls in which there are provided a large opening 16 through which the queen bee and some worker bees are introduced, an exit port 22 for the queen bee and an exit port 18 for the worker bees. Opening 16, which is preferably in the floor, and ports 18,22 can be selectively opened or closed by changing the relative positions of the two telescopic members 12,14. The device also includes a compartment for bee food such as candy which communicates with the queen bee exit 22. The latter is typically stoppered with the candy and in the new hive worker bees consume this as they make their way to the new queen bee. A slot may be formed in one of the walls through which a small sweeper member can be inserted for urging the queen bee to one end of the device where it can be marked and wing-clipped.
